Five Tips for Alerting Your Boss to Safety Hazards
There’s a right way to go about this task that makes it easier on everyone—both you and your boss. Just follow these tips when you notice dangerous situations:
- Be Positive About Your Concern. Though you may be worried about your safety, stay positive. You’re taking a smart first step towards getting an issue resolved. Say you’re worried about your own safety and those around you and bring up what you’ve noticed. You’re just trying to keep everyone safe and healthy.
- Don’t Point Fingers. Regardless of what caused the issue, don’t place blame. Simply state what you’ve noticed.
- Beware of Your Body Language. This could give off a negative vibe—especially if you cross your arms over your chest, point your finger, or appear angry. Relax your posture and smile. Present yourself as someone who wants to have a discussion about something important.
- Don’t Put Your Boss On the Spot. This can automatically put him or her on the defensive. It’s probably not a good idea to bring up the issue in a meeting or in front of others. Just ask your boss for time 1:1 to discuss your thoughts.
- Be Polite. Choose words that are friendly, rather than confrontational. Remember, you’re trying to improve something for the benefit of everyone—you’re coming from a good place and trying to make things even better.
Learn Safety Rules Ahead of Time
Another great way to address safety issues is by preventing them in the first place. Be sure you know how to use all tools, equipment, machinery, and chemicals properly to do your job. If you haven’t been trained on something involved in your job role, never be afraid to ask the proper procedure. It’s always acceptable to ask questions.
