Jobs You Can Get with Little or No Experience

Jumpstarting a career can prove difficult. Landing jobs is hard if you don’t have a lengthy resume to help you get your foot in the door. Often, to build up experience, you need to take the jobs you can get with little or no experience.

The trick: knowing which of these positions is for you. Finding the right entry-level gig will get your professional life headed in the right direction. With that in mind, here are a few jobs you can land without a lengthy work history:

Flaggers

When you see road construction, the area is usually marked off by signs, cones, and, yes, flags. Well, someone has to put those out. This duty falls to the flaggers, or, as they’re also known, “traffic control protectors.”

This represents the entry-level position on a construction crew. You can build experience and work your way up in this in-demand business. The average wage for a flagger stands at just under $14 an hour, or a little less than $30,000 a year.

General Laborers

The term “general laborer” sounds pretty generic, right? That’s kind of the point. They can handle a bit of everything. Think of infantry troops in the military. These workers handle the grunt work on construction sites, in warehouses, and wherever else they’re needed.

This isn’t always a glamorous job, but it often comes with a lot of variety. Also, the gig doesn’t require any specific skills. The salary for these positions varies significantly from place to place, or even firm to firm. The median figure comes in at $16 per hour, or a bit more than $30,000 a year.

Warehouse Associates

The warehouse industry has exploded in the last decade. (Just look at the trillion-dollar value the stock market puts on Amazon to see what we mean.) This creates a lot of opportunity in the industry, with the number of warehouse jobs more than doubling in the past 10 years.

These jobs have the added benefit of not requiring any previous experience. This makes them a great entry-level position for anyone seeking work. The average salary for these positions sits at around $28,000 a year.

General Cleaner

Here’s another one where the name sums up the duties. In this position, you’d be responsible for simple cleaning tasks. Think of things like sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming.

As you might guess, the starting salary here won’t blow you away. The average pay comes in just above $11 an hour, or about $23,000 a year. Still, there are lots of open positions available at any given time and you can use the position to fill in your resume.

Office Clerk

Every office needs someone to file paperwork and run errands. Those tasks fall to an office clerk. Depending on the company, this role can also include some customer-relation duties, such as answering phones or greeting visitors. It’s even possible that office clerks will dip into more critical functions, like light bookkeeping or putting together financial documents.

The median salary for an office clerk runs $13.65, according to PayScale. However, given the broad range of duties that can come with the role, the salary varies significantly from place to place. (Again, each company will have different expectations.) As a result, you’ll find some entry-level positions paying as little as $10 an hour, while others might earn you more than $18.
